This morning I will be travelling with Miss Rach to the Children's Hospital in PA. She has to go through a uncomfortable procedure to check her kidneys and after lunch we will meet with the Dr. to hear the results. Will you say a little prayer for her? I'm praying she has outgrown her problem and we can discontinue the medicine she has been on for almost two years now.

We appreciate your prayers!!

Ok, so I usually go wordless on Wed...however, I need your help! Today, I had a whole day, well actually just the time the kids were in school, to myself. Little A is off visiting my mom and dad for a few days! So, a little trip to the mall was in order! I have been wanting a day like this for a looong time! It was actually strange...I didn't know what to do! I went to the book store and then stopped in a few clothing stores. It is a rare occasion I buy myself clothes! I was quite proud that I didn't even check out the kids clothes--that's usually my first stop! My vote is still out on some of the current fashions...I'm really trying to embrace different styles. Hence, the subject of this post....I need your vote! What do you think of the shirt below in the picture? I kinda like it, but need other opinions. The shirt I grabbed to put on under didn't work at all, so I'm going to have to find something else. Please be totally honest....

Although we have had an extremely mild winter...its almost 47 here today...I'm starting to long for the carefree days of summer. I really don't want the school year to be over cause my girls each have really great teachers this year-I'm just starting to get that 'feeling'. The feeling starts mid-winter ever year and I just can't help thinking I just need a taste, smell, sight, feel of this wonderful place.....

I want to be sitting on the beach waiting for two of my favorite guys to join me in the warm sand...

I want to look out at the majestic ocean and watch the kids run and jump in the waves while shrieks of laughter fill the air....

I want to close my eyes and feel the warm sun shining down, while taking deep breaths and smelling the salty air mixed with coconut tanning lotion....

I want wear my favorite sun dress and go out to eat at our favorite seafood place that has the absolute best hush puppies on earth...

Ahh, I LoVe days at the beach!!

My Project Life--Week Four

I have to admit...this week I wasn't as diligent at taking pictures... :-( I'm a little mad at myself for it. Does anyone else feel like time just escapes them? I wake up and before I turn around its time to go to bed and start all over again. Trying to embrace the little moments--but, finding myself tangled in the trenches of the day.

Meet...Big Daddy...

I'm having a love affair...don't tell B! Well, never mind...he already knows--gasp!! He's actually the one who introduced me to Big Daddy! (and you thought this was a family blog ;-)

I have had an ongoing obsession with Big Daddy for years now...I would be slightly envious when he was in the hands of other women, I would see him in stores and drool, and I would think of him often and wonder when he would be mine....

Well, Christmas 2011, my wish came true...he was sitting under my tree and I didn't even know it!

Pleased to introduce....

Big Daddy!!

In all seriousness though, this is the greatest gift (next to my kids) my husband has ever given me. I've have wanted what I have always called 'A Big Daddy' camera for y e a r s. The money has never allowed. Well, I take that back...one year I had a Big Daddy in a box on my lap and I made my husband return it. I know, I know, crazy!! B's sweet gma gave us a generous gift that Christmas and two days later we were off to buy it. I picked it out, decided on a bag, filters, the warranty, and was sicker than a dog when we took it to the counter to pay for it...I had to go to the car. It was just s o much money. B brought it out, sat it on my lap, and I argued with him for 10 mins to return it! He did and shook his head all the way home and kept asking why. All I could tell him was that it didn't feel right....five months later he lost his job.

Of course in the time following that, there wasn't even mention of Big Daddy. It was a time of survival.

Its funny how when something happens in your life and all the things that seemed important before then don't mean the same after. Sure, I still wanted a BD, but I knew it would eventually happen and my life wasn't going to stop if I didn't get the camera, or anything else for that matter, of my dreams.

So, Christmas morning my gorgeous husband put a big sack on my lap. I had a feeling I knew what was in the bag...I had asked for a new duffel and was fairly certain it was waiting in the bag and it was. ;-) I took the duffel out and noticed it felt heavy...bewildered, I opened it up and there was a gift bag inside. I look at B and he had a huge smile on his face. I was like what is this??....and with an extra smile he said "you'll see". So I opened the gift bag and looked inside and pulled out a camera bag!!!! I literally bawled for 10 minutes!! I didn't open it up, I just sat there with it on my lap, with my hands on top of the bag and cried! I looked at my husband and he was crying and all the kids were just sitting in the array of ripped wrapping paper and gifts, smiling and chanting 'open it, open it'!

After gaining my composure and wiping the tears, I opened and trembled as I took it out of the bag. I couldn't believe he actually bought it. When I questioned how (cause I know the finances to the penny) he told me he had saved his per diem money (the money he uses for food while he travels for work) since last January. Well, I started crying again!! I just couldn't believe it...

It's funny how things really are worth the wait and I give credit to God...cause its all in his timing!

What I'm truly thankful for, camera or no camera, is that God destined my wonderful husband for me!

SnOw DaY!

Guess what...for the second Friday in a row...we have had a snow day!! Yay for a 3 day, and last week, a 4 day weekend! The snow really wasn't enough to cancel school...maybe just a two hour delay, but hey, we still got them!

We still haven't got SNOW, SNOW...you know the kind...where we are stranded inside for two, three, four days. The kind of snow days where the long winter day seems to last forever and hearty soup simmers all day--ready to be savored whenever the urge strikes, the smell of warm bread penetrates the house, and hot coco is always in supply. The kind of days where its pointless to get out of your pajamas and the hardest chore of the day is deciding which window to sit beside to watch the endless white stuff as it covers the ground with its glistening goodness. Long naps are always in order and its the perfect time to catch up on a good book. Days where the kids giggle with delight as the inches pile up and they almost burst with excitement while planning their sleigh riding adventures. Days where memories are made that last forever...

Prayers

Here are two prayers from our church bulletin yesterday that I want to share...

Our heavenly Father, by the waters of baptism you have cleansed and transformed us, marking us your children. Come close to us in these moments of prayers and devotion. Free us from needless worry and anxious thoughts. Speak to our minds and hearts this morning worlds of encouragement and hope. Inspire us to faithful living and devoted service in the name of Christ. Amen

Beautiful!

Loving God, we acknowledge that we have not always been faithful and remembered our baptism. We have forgotten we are marked as your children. Truth to tell, we have not always behaved in a way which reflected our commitment to Christ. Too many times we have ignored your voice and failed to do your will. Forgive us our sins and have mercy upon us. Help us to be more loving and considerate of others. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen

These words struck me yesterday. Some days, I have not been faithful to Gods will....I want MY plan to work and forget to realize its HIS plan that I need to follow. To me, this prayer is a gentle reminder to focus on God, to remember we need to follow him...because we are HIS children!!

Showing Some Compassion

When I get that tickle of a thought in my head and it just won't go away, I just know its meant to be...

The seed was planted a few years ago after reading about Kelly from Kellys Korner going on a mission trip for Compassion International. For whatever reason, we didn't decide to sponsor a child at that point...

Well, Kelly recently went on another Compassion trip and I was moved to tears and that little seed started to grow. I started to think and think about sponsoring a child--but, with the holidays here, I got busy and sorta forgot about it until after Christmas...

We tried really hard this year to "down-size" our gift giving to the kids--but, they still got TOO MUCH! It's almost shameful to think about how much they got! We are very thankful we have such giving families-- but its still TOO MUCH. There are times I'm not sure my kids appreciate what they have. There are days, I don't appreciate what I have. We really try to talk our kids about kids in need; we have served several charities, we have bought gifts for angel tree kids, and filled Salvation Army stockings...but, I long for them to have a deeper understanding of the world and kids who live in poverty. I want them to share their love for Jesus by helping the most needy!!

So after feeling a huge calling....we signed up to sponsor a child last night!!! We are so excited and they kids were thrilled to help! We printed her little picture/info and the girls made about 20 copies and her picture is now pasted all over our house!! We can't wait to get her info packet!! The kids have already started drawing pictures and keep talking about how they like to sing and play house just like her!

The "hardest" part of the whole process was picking which child to sponsor! There are so many and all of those little faces are just precious!! Of course, a debate started about if we should pick a boy or girl...so, we put boy and girl on pieces of a paper and drew it out of a hat. Then we took the average of the kids ages...age 8. We entered the info in the computer and it showed 97 girls age 8!! Oh, all those faces!! One little face stuck out to me, but the kids wanted to keep looking. We then decided to look at the list of girls who have been waiting 6 mths or longer...and the little face that stuck out to me was second on the list. Everyone decided she was the one!

When we clicked on her info, I was taken back that she shares the same middle name of my sweet mamaw--the one I was the closest to growing up! and her birthday is the same as my parents anniversary...the day after Christmas!!

We are in love and are so excited to help Compassion help this child lead a better life!!

15, 10, 8, and 3

At the start of a new year, I always start to think of what the year will bring, plans we have for the year, things we want to accomplish and soo much more. Then my thoughts turn to my kids and how old they are going to be in the new year...

Where did the time go?

How is it possible my baby boy, my first born, is going to turn 15 this year? He will start high school in the fall, apply for his learners permit, and probably grow taller than his father this year--he surpassed me in height last year!

my eldest daughter will be double digits?? The tween stage is beginning, middle school is only two years away, and she is almost as tall as her mother!!

I honestly still look at her as she is still 5. Every year I'm in amazement she is as old as she is! I still remember when she was born and my husband handed to me...I looked down and said hello and she slightly lifted her head and looked at me. (sniff-sniff) didn't that just happen yesterday!

and 3....

I can't even fathom that it has be three whole years since we welcomed our baby boy into this world. What a joy in our lives this child has been!! So happy and funny! He loves trains and cars, will go to 3 yr old preschool in the fall, and hopefully will potty train soon...

I cannot stop time, only embrace the moment!

My Project Life~2012

Hello and welcome to my blog! I'm thrilled to start a new scrapbooking project this year....Project Life! This is my first time doing Project Life and I'm very excited to begin this exciting journey! I have scrapbooked for almost nine years now--but, have seemed to scrap less and less with the more kids I have. I don't even have a book started for little Andrew and he will be three in a couple of months.....

That is why I know Project Life will be a great choice for me during this stage of my life. We are very busy and my time to extensively scrap huge layouts is on hold for right now. I had a hard time deciding on which style to go with and finally decided on the Turquoise kit--I ordered the binder and the core kit. I decided the variety page protectors are best for me and can't wait to order them in Feb. So, I don't have any layouts yet....but, I have kept up with my journal cards and picture taking. Yay!! My plan of attack is to take a picture a day and incorporate special events in as I go.

A Scrappin' I will Go....

I'm off...well, almost. Just a few more hours and I will be in the car--all.by.myself.--to meet my friend at a scrapbooking crop get-a-way. It's been so long since I have scrapbooked and scrapbook I will--two days worth! Excited and a tad bit perplexed as to when I will fit sleep in--the ladies we're joining are die-hards, staying up into the wee hours of the night and then getting up a few hours later. I hope I can make it!

What I am really looking forward to is some time for myself around other adult women and not a kid in sight. You know I LoVe my family and treasure the time with my kiddos...but, it has been such a loooong time since I have had any time away for myself! {insert Pointer Sisters--I'M SO EXCITED!!}

Field Trip

Today, a little cutie is going on her first field trip EVER and she is BEYOND excited. Since she brought the forms home, she has been counting down the days and proudly announced each night how many days there were before the big day. I don't think it really mattered where they're going, just the fact that, well, they're going.

Last night she decorated her lunch bag.....

She is so excited to see the dinosaurs and "we are wactually going to dig for fossils mommy!" "Wactually Rach?"--"wactually so mommy!"

I am excited for her, but a little sad...parents weren't needed to chaperone! I know she is going to have a blast and she will have lots of fun memories to share when she gets home!

Homemade Birdfeeder

Recently, I found the neatest idea in the magazine Birds and Blooms. A reader wrote in and explained how he took old salad bowls he no longer used and made a hanging bird feeder. He drilled holes in the middle of each of the four bowls and then hung them on what looked like a flexible metal rod (the article said, but I forgot what kind it was :)

I loved the idea and I started thinking of different ideas on how to make my own bowl bird feeder. At first, I didn't think I had any bowls I wanted to give up, so I went to Target and looked at terra cotta saucers I thought would work--but, at almost three bucks each, I thought this was too expensive. Plus, I didn't know how much a flexible metal rod would cost me. So, I came home that night thinking the next time I was out at any discount stores, I would try to find some cheap bowls. Then I realized I have these old wooden salad bowls....

we bought these several years ago and have never used them. I didn't feel guilty about using them for this project because one has a chip around the top. After consulting with my dad, he suggested I use rope instead of the metal rod--he too thought the rod might be pricey. So off we went to the local hardware store and for $2.49, I bought an 8 foot piece of rope.

My dear husband drilled holes in the center of each bowl....

then threaded the rope through the center and tied a knot at the bottom of each bowl....

next, we tied a loop at the top and hung it under the overhang. The bowls are a little tilted due to the unevenness of the knots, but I LoVe the look!

Filled with seed and ready to go....

I'm anxious to see the birds will enjoy it as much as I will enjoy watching them!! ;-)

I realized I never posted pictures of Andrew's birthday party....He really likes horses; so, of course, his theme was all horse! Here are some highlights from his party:

Yes, we actually had a pony! Probably the craziest thing I've ever done for a party, but he LoVeD it! He is all about "neigh-neighs" right now and he had a blast! My girls were really surprised too--they would love to own a horse and enjoyed it as well. We had lots of friends and family join us (I didn't add many others pictures to the collage, I don't want anyone to feel uncomfortable having their kids pic on the internet) and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. We also celebrated Brian's birthday--his and Andrews are only two days apart!

Yesterday evening I happened upon a song I just fell head-over-heels in LoVe with...Hourglass by Mindy Gledhill. Have you ever heard it? Beautiful, simply beautiful! I probably listened to it twenty times last night; breathing deep, soaking in the words, the music and thinking of my children, my joys, my gifts from God as every word played out. All My Little Peeps...

The weather on this St. Patrick's Day has been just beautiful and that got me thinking (and hoping) how Spring has finally sprung.... I LoVe Spring! The weather is great, the flowers begin to bloom, and quite possibly, a momma may find some baby chicks to show her little peeps...

and the kids were thrilled!!

Andrew was pointing, smiling, and yelling "chick-chick"!!

Then the girls started plotting on how to ask their father for one...

but, alas, we will just have to settle for trying to hold our fast little friend...

There are signs my children are growing up all the time...clothes that fit yesterday and don't fit today, buying the next size shoe, reading harder books or for one, just starting to read and (yikes) doing more independent things.....

Tonight is Hannah's night--she is going to her first official birthday sleepover. She has stayed overnight a couple of times with a friend whose family we know quite well and we have had a friend stay here before; but never a full fledged sleepover.

Why am I so nervous?

Part of me has been waiting for this day...I know for a fact at least one other girl in her class has had a sleepover (or two) and Han wasn't invited. I'm not sure if Han knew of the sleepovers or not--if so, she never said and of course I would never dare ask her. The momma bear in me has been waiting and wondering if my daughter would ever receive her own invitation to sleepover blissdom--we all want our children to be included.

So why am I so nervous??

Maybe cause she is growing up and slumber parties are going to be much more common--independence is starting to take hold...and the other part is I won't be there to monitor, to guide, to protect. The innocent--"we all play nice together" little girl world is fading. Cliques form, gossip begins, cattiness can and will take over. Hopefully we have a few more years to go, but its hard to not see some of it beginning to creep into even an eight year old world.

So, in an half hour I will send her off --she has about drove us crazy counting down the minutes all day long. She is excited and packed all by herself. So I will paint a smile on my face, walk her to the door and give her a big hug and tell her to have a blast--all the while praying for a smooth night of fun with friends.

The tears already formed when I double checked her bag and found her little "makeup" case at the top ....

I have a favorite candle I keep on the ledge of my garden window--it has a deep yummy vanilla fragrance with two wicks and I love to light it during the day while I am doing my daily chores around the kitchen. The scent fills the air and it is as part of this house as we are. I often 'forgot' about my candle until evening time when the dishes are waiting and its warm flicker is there waiting to great me. Last night, I noticed one the wicks stopped burning and the other burned down pretty far.

When I went to light it this morning, I had to chip away the wax around the wick until it would finally take. The other side lit right up. That candle is kinda like life isn't it?? Or, at least my life right now.....nothing is quite ever in balance, my proportions in all I do are off whack--too much of this, not enough of that, build up of the good, the bad, and sometimes ugly, and at times I feel like I come up short with the demands of motherhood and in my roll as a wife. Just like my lopsided candle--there are days my wick burns bright and others when I have to work at chipping it all away...and really, I couldn't do any of it without HIS light helping to shine through!

For many reasons, socks are not my favorite clothing item to fold. I think its because we always seem to lose the all too important other half of the pair. Socks drive me CRAZY!!! I have a bag full of lone socks just waiting to be reunited with its MIA mate. Truly, I don't understand how or where the significant others go... and it doesn't seem to be one particular person in the fam who loses socks--we seem to all be victims of the perplexing epidemic!!

So, I always have piles of socks waiting to be folded, waiting to be reunited with their long lost friend, and some just wait...

Thankfully, my husband doesn't mind tackling our sock piles....however, he has been quite busy with work lately and not available to help out--much to my dismay on many different levels!

So today I tried to enlist the help of Andrew and his two little buddies who visit us during the week days to help sort and fold.....

Looks like I'm going to have to learn to love folding socks!!

Six Signs....

Today is an anniversary of sorts...ten years ago today was the day my wonderful B asked me to marry him! I was still in college and the plan was I was going to stop by his apartment after class--you see though, he kept insisting I come right after class that afternoon (even then, he knew me all to well :) Little did I know why he was sooo persistent that day....

So, forty-five minutes after class was over, I walked to his apartment--he lived on campus and could actually see me finally coming down the hill. The door to the apartment was unlocked (surprise) and I let myself in and announced "Sorry, I'm finally here" (no answer). I walked up the steps into the living area and paused to marvel at the little guy sleeping on the couch and quietly called B's name--still no answer! Then I noticed a sign on the door leading into the office area..."You know I love you with all my heart" Then another sign on the next door facing...."I know in my heart you are the one!" I walked into the office, with a baffled flutter in my heart, and on the far wall was two more signs..."Will" "YOU" and then on the door facing leading into the bedroom was a third sign..."Marry" and as I rounded the corner there he was on his knee with "ME" taped to his chest, arm extended, ring out and tears in his eyes!!!! I stood there with my mouth gaping for what was probably an eternity to him, said yes, and our wedding plans began!! :-)

A few school days ago, the kids had a two hour delay and it was one of those mornings no one slept in. What I first felt as slight disappointment of missing some extra sleep, quickly turned into a moment where my heart feels all warm and I can feel the love for my kids flowing through my body. As I was sitting on the couch checking my emails, I glanced over and saw this sweet scene...

It just wasn't the fact they were looking out the window together, but the 'conversation' that was taking place. She was sweetly telling him how pretty the snow looked, how much there was, and how the "trucker with the big plow" would soon be by. And he was answering her with his own little 'words' and they continued looking and talking for ten minutes or so. I was lost in the beauty of it all--the beauty of siblings, of their sweetness, and the awe that God would give me? such a beautiful and precious gift!

Wanna see one of my new favorite pics??

Oh, how I LOVE this little guy and his sweet little face! He was 22 months on the 2nd and I still can't believe in less than two months, he will be entering the Terrific Twos!!

I don't know if its because he is my baby or because I know how fast the others are growing--but, I am really savoring my time with him. Maybe its a combination of both?! I find myself much more patient and less worried about the trivial--is this where the older and (somewhat) wiser saying fits in? There is a tiny bit of guilt though--wishing I could go back and savor the others early years just a little more. Oh, there is still time; but, everyday it seems to be ticking faster and faster. Won't it slow down just a bit?

My guess is no--so, I will play a little longer, hold a little tighter, and count my blessings again and again!! I am very thankful for the time God has given me to enjoy this little face and the faces of three others!

(Or maybe this one should be my favorite??)

It's hard to believe another Christmas has past and the New Year is only a two days away! Here are a few highlights of our Christmas Holiday 2010....

With a little encouragement and two large rolls of wrapping paper; the girls went through their room and found seventeen toys they wrapped and gave to the local mission so Santa would have extra gifts to give the kids on Christmas morning. They were so excited and I am very proud!

Next came the annual Christmas program--

Fall is one of my favorite times of the year. I love everything about it~the pumpkins, scarecrows, changing colors, and even the cooler temperatures! Today the weather changed and the rain came for a visit. It was a dreary, cool day~a perfect day to stay inside, snuggle, and watch movies all day. During the second movie of the day, my mind drifted off to thoughts of warmer days and summer memories....

As the sun sets on today, my heart is always happy thinking back to this one....

Eight families loaded their vehicles and caravanned for the big city and enjoyed a day of tailgating, awards, a good game--the first professional game for many of the kids--and lots of laughter and fellowship. Just the word--Words is causing me to shutter right now. My heart is heavy with how words can be used in cruel and harsh ways. It is a fact though, without words, what would life--the good and the bad--be??

Sometimes we don't realize what damage they can do and the consequences of using them incorrectly. I don't believe most young people realize when they use certain words what damage, hurt, and misunderstanding they can cause! Heck, I believe this statement can apply to some adults as well...

Recently, my daily bible study touched on this and the author strongly believes that yes, we should demonstrate Christian love and acts to all; however, we should mainly surround ourselves with those who bring us up and not those who constantly tear us down with their words. Apparently, easier said than done.

But, I can tell you, they have all had fun and really that is what counts the most. The first round of a double elimination tournament…the underdogs…the team who “almost” won many times…the team who finally pulled it off in the end. Winning isn’t everything and trust me, they have learned that lesson this season….and I truly believe that makes today’s win—even more special!

Where Does Time Go??

I have been having a hard time lately with the concept of time. I have moments when I think how it is fleeting before my eyes. Today is June 10th--in one month on this day, my eldest daughter will be eight! Eight!?! When did this happen--how did this happen? It was just yesterday she was a baby, a little girl with who still had baby teeth...

Then I started thinking about August 10th--our wedding anniversary will have passed as well as my birthday. Our summer will begin winding down. We will start shopping for back to school. Cross Country practice will start again. The schedule will begin to form; a routine will once again be in place.

I am really trying to embrace every moment, trying to let go of the daily chaos and savor the fleeting moments. This is my goal--trying to not ask why and to just live in the moment. Wish me luck ;)

His Last At Bat

Typically, Wednesdays around here are Wordless--I was going to add my picture and title and leave it at that....But, when I got ready to hit publish, I just couldn't--I needed to pour out some words.

Early spring four years ago there was a little boy who went with his father to a gym. In his hands he held a bat and glove and they both had faint smiles as the gym doors closed leaving his father to pace outside of them. Nerves abounded, but he did his best and then all there was to do was wait on the phone call...

Well, he made it and he had never been so excited. That was the year he declared baseball was his life: piano fell by the wayside, interest in all other sports was lost; he was going to be a MLB player one day.

I remember his first hit as a nine year old like it was yesterday. It was late and he was finally put in the game (coaches are only required to play nine year olds one at bat and two innings in the field and usually the outfield at that) Rachel was just little--asleep in my arms-- a "big" twelve year old was pitching and I could see Aus shaking as he got in his stance--ball one--strike, ball two--strike! Then, I closed my eyes, said a little prayer and he hit it! Not far, mind you, but it was still a hit and he made it to base. You would have thought he had hit a home run by our reaction.

I don't know how many hours we have sat on the picnic table under the pine tree--but it has been worth every single minute. We have seen him strike out, hit, sit the bench, miss the easy catch, and catch the impossible, celebrate, and yes, there have been a few tears of disappointment. I hate to admit it, but there were times I complained about all the hours--the practices, the games in the rain, the late nights. But now it is over and I am a sad. Yes, there are other leagues, more chances to play ball....but, who knows if that is the path he will continue. This is yet another milestone we have crossed, another path that has ended, another sign it was my little boys turn to be the "big" twelve year old on the field.

He matured so much over the last four years...he started out wanting to win, to be the big shot, to realizing sometimes there is so more to just winning the game--it really is about how you conduct yourself on the field and off and most importantly to just have fun. And for this, I couldn't be more proud!

Just the other day it dawned on me that it was around this time last year that I started my blog! So, I dug into the archives and my very first post was on April 20, 2009--I posted a link to another blog in hopes of winning a contest--ha!

Yesterday, I pulled into the drive after picking the kids up from school and after everyone piled out, I sat there for a few minutes and when I looked up I noticed my Irises. I started thinking back to my post about Blooming (one of my favorite posts) with pictures of one of my favorite flowers.

Here they are, one year later, blooming again and I am always amazed at the beauty of this flower! Amazed at how God created such a work of art and it starts off bundled up in a long green package!

I still hope that I am blooming myself a little bit each day...

Today it is raining and the kids are off of school for Election Day. Two welcome reliefs--my children are home and the rain will hopefully cancel this evenings activities. The kids declared they are doing nothing and are happily playing. I decided this was the perfect day to catch up on some scrapbooking. I haven't seriously scrapbooked in awhile--I had a half-hearted attempt a few weeks ago that fell short.

So, I dug out completed layouts that are in despeprate need of pictures. As I started sorting through the boxes of pictures, I was taken back....

to memories of what seem like yesterday; but, at the same time so long ago. Memories of new beginnings and lost loved ones…Memories of friends, holidays, births, and birthdays…Memories of vacations, first steps, new experiences, and big accomplishments. Memories I remember vividly and others that have been stored away--thankful I have the picture to tell the story.

The pictures state the obvious--I cannot stop time. Yes, my children are growing up and all too soon! All I can do is enjoy today, make new memories, and everyday unwrap a memory or two from the past...

Humble Moments

Do you ever get so caught up in the chaos of the moment or day that you tend to forget how blessed you really are? Do you ever get frustrated, sad, or upset over the silliest of things only to realize--your life and everything in it really isn't as bad as you are making it at that moment?? There isn't a day that goes by in which these feelings seem to creep in and take hold. The thing is, little moments are presented to me where I see, hear, or feel something that causes me instantly to change my mind and appreciate everything I have been given... God's little reality checks!

Like most mornings, in every household with the kids, I'm sure, the morning "routine" is chaotic. We do not have bus service, so I have to take the kids to school everyday. Hubs cannot help out because his work day starts early. So, the five of us has to be out the door and in the car by 7:20, at the latest. What should be a 3 minute drive to the school turns into 10 to 15... So, everyone has to be dressed, feed, school work together, snacks, books, lunches, bundled up, so, I need to have my ducks in a row. Needless to say, mornings at our house can be crazy!

Tuesday morning a few weeks ago, really sticks out in my head. It was cold, I was tired, the kids were grumpy, and nothing was coming together. We were late and I was *deep breath* barking orders and was not very patient at all. We piled in the car and finally made it to the first cross walk in front of the school--I told Aus he could get out here today since we were running behind. I stopped, with a huge line of traffic behind me, put the car in park, the flashers on, and hit the button to open his door. Wouldn't open--either he hit the button beside the door at the same time or the door wasn't working.... *grumble* I hit the button again, nothing, I started to hear beeping and so I drove off grumbling the whole way. Then I start into my tirade of "we need to get it together in the mornings and why isn't the door working and why does everything seem to go wrong all the time....Then we pulled behind a car--a car that was incredibly beat up with a cloth replacing the back glass. A tattered looking young man emerged looking quite sad and gave a half hearted wave as he started for the door. *deep breath, sigh* I turned and looked at my little passengers....and Tuesdays humble moment began.

Hi All, I wanted to hop on here real quick to let you know that I am having computer issues and hopefully it will be fixed by the weekend. After talking to the repair man, he thinks my trusty laptop is over heating and as a safety measure--it just turns itself off. So, I have only been turning it on if I have to...he told me it could get too hot and burn up if I'm not careful--YIKES! He is going to take it apart and clean it and make sure nothing else is wrong. I just hope I survive!! I miss reading everyone and hope to catch up by next week! Have a good one!!

Twitter?? and the Beach!

this is the pier my husband would take a walk on every year as a child. this is the pier my husband was going to take me on and ask me to marry him--but he couldn't wait and asked me in January instead of August. this is the pier we now walk our children on almost every year!

Ok, I truly, truly have NO idea what I am doing--but I am trying! Does anybody know anything about Twitter? Let me explain--I found Carolina Mamas blog and she is at the Mom Bloggers 2010 retreat in one of my favorite places on this earth--Ocean Isle Beach in super lovely North Carolina! If I had known, I would have gone! OIB holds a very special place in my heart! You see, my husband has visited OIB every year since he was three years old with his entire family! His grandparents started the tradition--they would rent a place and "give" it as a Christmas gift and the fam would vacation the first of August together! I was so intrigued by this when I first met my husband--you see, my family never took a vacation anywhere! I know, so hard to believe; but, my dad was in the Air Force prior to our family and he has the “has been there done that" philosophy. Major boo to me, because as a kid I dreamed of travel and still do ;)

Unfortunately, the first year we were married was the year Brian's grandma decided to end the tradition and I was CRUSHED! She felt she was getting too old to travel that far and there were 28 of us and it was just too much for her! So sad! Anyway, we started the tradition for our own family. So any beach pictures you see on my blog--we are on OIB! We have been almost every year since we got married, except last year--with Brian's job change--it was just impossible for a variety of reasons! I was devastated and I am still not over it! We are going to try to go in August this year; but, gosh August is such a long time away!

Alright, back to Twitter. Saturday evening there is going to be a Twitter party at the Mom Bloggers Retreat on Ocean Isle Beach and the grand prize winner receives a two night’s stay at the Ocean Isle Inn on OIB!! What I wouldn't give!! What a getaway would mean to me right now! So, I have signed myself up for Twitter and plan to party down tomorrow night! My son came home from school yesterday and showed me the coolest website! The North American Bear Center has placed a webcam in the den of a black bear named Lily and you can watch her in action! So far, I have watched a lot of sleeping; but, Austin said she started to wake up and move around right when the bell rang --the whole class was bummed they couldn't stay to watch!

Well, I did it once again--I fell off the bloggy wagon! I promised myself I wasn't going to this year and it happened just like that! The main reason being, my kids were only in school 1 1/2 days last week! Yes, our Christmas break continued due to large amounts of snow and bitterly cold weather. Here is a fun little cooking activity we did on Friday--we made birdseed biscuits! We thought it was appropriate to give the birds an extra yummy treat in all this cold weather. Here are the highlights and yes, two of my children are still in the pajamas--but, we had messy FUN--the best kind!

I use Bisquick and follow the directions on the box for making biscuits. We used 2 1/4 cups mix and 2/3 cups of water (instead of milk)--each kid made their own dough--and then we added a large handfull of birdseed. They mixed, kneeded, rolled, and then cut out the dough into various shapes. I have a huge box of plastic cookies cutters I bought years ago and it has been the best $15 I ever spent! Then, I have the kids poke a hole in the dough, with either their finger or a pencil--in the middle of the cutout works best--so we can run the string, yarn, or raffia through to hang the biscuits on the tree--we used raffia this time. Birdseed biscuits are super fun to make and are good for the environment too--the birds get a treat and they will use the leftover string (yarn or raffia) in the spring to help make their nests! Colored yarn is the best--we have seen nests with yarn from previous birdseed biscuits!

Angel Food

I wanted to share this with you before Christmas, but didn't have the chance. Have you heard about the Angel Food Ministires? Angel Food is an organization which provides various boxes of frozen and fresh food at a low cost on a monthly basis. They offer a "basic" box--which is $30 and is valued around $60-- and is enough food to feed a family of four for a week or so. There are also other boxes of food offered at really good prices--check out January's menu here. With each box of Angel Food purchased, you also receive a copy of "The Servant"--a magazine designed to help spread God's word. Angel Food is open to ANYONE--if you eat, you qualify!! The organization is non-profit, non-denominational organization and distributes to over 5,200 sites a month across the US--look here for a site near you.

Our church is a host site and my good friend is the coordiantor. Brian helps unload the truck on distruibution day and we purchase at least a basic box every month and a fruit and veggie. We have always been happy with the majority of items offered in the basic box--every once in awhile, we find something we don't care for, but I have NEVER been disappointed in the fruit and veggie box. Every other month we try to buy a box to donate. So, if you don't want a box or two for yourself, you can bless someone else with some yummy food. Another big plus of Angel Food is that each box the host sites distributes, they contribute $1 to the benevolence fund. Our church takes this money and buys more boxes to donate for others in need. It truly is a wonderful program!

I wanted to share this with you because maybe your family could benefit from a box--who couldn't use a reduction in their monthly grocery expense, or you may like to help a family in need, or maybe you could volunteer on distribution day or even start an Angel Food Ministry at your church.

A Christmas Eve to Remember....

Today has been wonderful in so many ways! Our day started with yummy cinnamon rolls and then we were off to Brian’s parents in the afternoon for a delicious dinner and gift exchange. We are blessed with a wonderful family!

This evening, we had the extreme honor of playing Mary, Joseph, and Jesus during the family service at our church! Andrew did very well--he smiled, "talked", and clapped his hands--needless to say, he was a lively and slightly "chunky" Jesus! I am so blessed with my wonderful children and I can only imagine how Mary felt when she held Jesus is her arms....

Oh and Dear Santa~Our family is quite touched that you sent us a Christmas gift today! We were very, very surprised and quite speechless as we unwrapped our new treasures!! Your kindness is felt beyond measure and you brought tears to our adult eyes and huge squeals from the children! Thank you Santa--your little gift means more than you know ;)

We have been very, very busy week and I have missed you...However, it looks as if I am going to have plenty of time at home today...

The white stuff started falling around 10 pm last night and the forecast calls for 100% chance the rest of today and into Sunday! My parents live south of here, yet in the higher elevation and they already have 22 inches!

So, I will be coming by for a "visit" today and look forward to catching up!

Oh, and I may do a little scrappin' too! Whoo-hoo!

O' Scrappy Days!

It has been so long--too long! I have made a few cards here and there...but, it’s not quite the same.

I have tried it all--crochet, cross stitch, sewing, you don’t want to hear me sing, and playing sports really isn't my thing--but, scrapbooking IS! Have I told you all this before? I finally found something I LoVe and I believe you really can’t go wrong with scrapbooking--to each his own--an expression of love--a forever gift!

Yesterday, I went to my dear friend Vicki's home for her bi-monthly scrapbook class and there they were--two blank pieces of Christmas red paper waiting for all the trimmings to make them complete. Paper trees, snowflakes, jewels, and ribbons all ready for the taking! Let me know what you think:

Yes, I'm a Sucker!

By the looks of this picture, you probably know where this is going! Just ask my husband, I am a sucker for (most) cute, furry critters! I could easily live on a farm and tend to my animals all day--instead we live in the "burbs" and B says the children are enough to tend to!

We have put off getting a new pet for quite a while--since learning I was expecting Andrew--we figured we would have enough to take care of...We first encountered the little fluffy balls of sweet after the kids Christmas card picture. As a reward for doing well at the pictures, we always stop by the pet store on our way out. The kids understand that we are just looking and they do such a good job of obeying. I am the one who doesn't want to listen to my own rules and the hubs always intervenes when he sees the twinkle in my eye and the "look" that I always give him. We are then ushered out the door...with his promise of soon. And I have to admit, he is right...

However, last week the kids had dentist appointments and I was so proud of the fact that we left there with NO cavities--I wanted to give them a little reward...

We are happy to introduce Mr. George Fluff Randolph to the family! ;)

Thanksgiving Chairs

Warm Greetings and Hugs all with the message--its been too long! The men retreat to their favorite recliner in the family room, the kids jaunt outside to enjoy the unseasonably warm air--which is enough of a reason itself to be thankful for--while the matriarchs tend to the stirring and final preparations. Of course, sweet Andrew needed mommas nourishment; so, I found myself sitting in the comfy living room and relishing a few moments of silence--except for the not too distance clang of pots, pans, and bursts of laughter. As we settled in, my attention turned toward the dinning room--the spacious room with large windows and beautiful built-ins--the room where the feast would soon begin. The room, which not only held two tables lined with table cloths and dishes--which I'm sure are older than I--but, the start of the goodness--homemade pickles, beets, applesauce, and Aunt Martha sweet tea.

For me though, the most striking part of this room is the chairs. Oh, those mismatched chairs! Over the years, many have taken turns in those chairs--for homework, prayers, games, dinners, and maybe a time-out or two..... Many I never met, many I had the privilege of knowing too short a time, many that helped shape my husband and his family that I know and love today, and many who are helping shape our family now.

As all the chairs were filled, we looked around in Thanks and Remembrance... Thanks for the chairs which were filled and remembrance for the chairs that were empty.

Focusing on the REAL Reason for the Season

I don't know where to begin--but, I am SO excited! Our Sunday School class started an Advent study this past Sunday and I am pumped up! Let me quote the back cover and see if you get the same feeling I did:

Are you tired of how consumerism has stolen the soul of Christmas? This year, take a stand! Join the groundswell of Christ-followers who are choosing to make Christmas what it should be--a joyous celebration of Jesus' birth that enriches our hearts and the world around us, not a retail circus that depletes our pocketbooks and defeats our spirits.

I LoVe every word! Straight to the heart!! For years, I have felt this way--Christmas is too commercial and it seems to be getting worse! The stores were stocking their shelves with Christmas stuff the week before Halloween this year!

Brian and I have decided to step back and hope to create a simpler Christmas for our kids this year. We are hoping to accomplish this by (and I quote):

Worship Fully--Because Christmas begins and ends with Jesus!

Spend Less--and free your resources for things that truly matter.

Give More--of your presence, your hands, your words, your time, your heart.

Love All--The poor, the forgotten, the marginalized, the sick, in ways that make a difference.
